The Enchantment of Amiens Christmas Market

On day two, we visit the vibrant city of Amiens, home to the largest Christmas market in Northern France. Each winter, Amiens is transformed into a shimmering winter wonderland, where over 130 charming wooden chalets line the city streets, filling the air with the sights, sounds, and scents of the season.

The market stretches through the bustling Rue des Trois Cailloux and surrounding areas, creating a festive trail that winds through the heart of the city. With stalls offering everything from handcrafted decorations and artisan gifts to mouthwatering French delicacies, you’ll find plenty of treasures to take home. Delight in the local holiday treats, such as macarons d’Amiens – a soft almond pastry that melts in your mouth – and steaming vin chaud (mulled wine), perfect for warming your hands and lifting your festive spirit.

Amiens' true crown jewel is the majestic Notre-Dame d’Amiens Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest Gothic cathedral in France. During the Christmas season, the cathedral comes alive with a breathtaking light show in the evening, where its intricate facade is bathed in vivid colours, telling stories of its history and the spirit of the holidays. As you gaze up at this masterpiece, bathed in festive glow, it’s impossible not to be swept up in the magic of Christmas.

Take your time to meander through the market’s delightful stalls, sip on hot chocolate or cider, and enjoy performances from carol singers and street entertainers as you soak in the festive atmosphere. The city’s stunning decorations, combined with its warm and welcoming market, make Amiens the perfect place to begin your Christmas adventure.

The Timeless Magic of Rouen Christmas Market

On day three, your festive journey continues with a visit to the historic city of Rouen, where Christmas magic fills every corner. Famous for its half-timbered medieval buildings and charming cobbled streets, Rouen becomes even more enchanting during the holiday season.

The highlight of your visit is the Rouen Christmas Market, held in the beautiful Place de la Cathédrale, with the awe-inspiring Rouen Cathedral as its backdrop. The cathedral, immortalised by Monet in his iconic paintings, is a sight to behold, particularly during the festive season when its Gothic spires are surrounded by twinkling lights and the soft glow of wooden chalets.

The market itself offers a wonderful selection of traditional stalls, where artisans showcase handmade gifts, festive ornaments, and unique crafts. Whether you’re looking for delicate glass baubles, wooden toys, or beautifully embroidered textiles, you’ll find the perfect gift for friends and loved ones.

As you stroll through the market, follow the irresistible aromas of roasted chestnuts, fresh pastries, and spiced cider. Treat yourself to classic French festive delights like crêpes, galettes, and buttery chouquettes. Be sure to try tartiflette, a deliciously warming dish made with melted cheese, potatoes, and bacon – the perfect fuel for a winter’s day of exploring.

Beyond the market, the streets of Rouen are decorated with festive garlands, sparkling lights, and Christmas trees, creating a fairytale setting. Take a moment to pause at one of the cosy cafés for a rich hot chocolate or a glass of mulled wine, and watch as the city comes alive with carollers, musicians, and joyous laughter.
